NCDA- OMEGA-3 presentation 19th April 2006

NCDA committee members, Susan Neil, Jennie Cross and Claire Clarke presented a cheque for £100 on behalf of NCDA committee, members and proceeds from the evening,  to Dr Alex Richardson for her continued Food and Behaviour Research.(FAB)

North Cumbria Dyslexia Association invited Dr. Alex Richardson to give a presentation about the benefits of OMEGA-3 on the intellectual and behavioural development of children.

Dr. Richardson is a senior research fellow in Physiology, University Lab of Physiology, Oxford; and co-director of UK charity, Food and Behaviour Research (FAB). She has particular expertise in the field of developmental conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autistic spectrum disorders.

It has been shown that Omega-3 particularly EPA can significantly improve attention, concentration and behaviour in children with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. Dr. Richardson was involved in the ‘Oxford-Durham study’ which revealed dramatic improvements in children’s reading and spelling after just three months of taking fatty acids supplements.

Adults too can benefit from omega-3. There are currently some studies to find out if omega-3 can help to prevent age –related memory problems as well as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The audience enthusiastically presented questions to Dr. Richardson.

For further information on the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids visit Dr. Richardson’s charity website at www.fabresearch.org
